Tolerance Tykes

The first volume of Tolerance Tykes came out in the fall of 2017, and completely changed my life. I will never forget flipping through the pages of a freshly printed book with tears in my eyes. The first ten characters I had created felt like my own children. The first book opens up with a poem that introduces the reader to Miss Brooke and ten of her favorite students. This book touches on topics such as Autism, Down syndrome, anxiety, gender identity and physical abilities. At the time of writing this first book, these issues seemed to be most prevalent among issues of bullying.

Tolerance Tykes 2

Tolerance Tykes 2 came out exactly one year after the first book was launched. The format of the book stayed the exact same, but this time around I introduced ten new children. Tolerance Tykes 2 focuses on children with issues such as; food allergies, ADHD, immigration, Diabetes, Asthma, Albinism, Dwarfism, Cystic Fibrosis, Spina Bifida and death of a parent. If I had to choose a favorite character from the second book I would have to choose Aaliyah. Aaliyah is new to the school and the country. This character is used to represent the many children that are having a hard time in school because they are from another country. I feel that this has been a pressing issue in recent years and should be discussed with children in order to make a child’s transition into a new country more peaceful.

Tolerance Tykes 3

Tolerance Tykes 3 is my newest book and once again introduces another ten children, each special in their own way. Tolerance Tykes 3 includes issues such as; obesity, Lyme disease, Vitiligo, cleft lip, homelessness, Alopecia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, burn survivor, Dyslexia and Epilepsy. My favorite character in the third book would have to be Haley. Haley is a child that is hiding the fact that she is homeless from her peers. I won’t tell you the end of the story but I will say, it is happy and heartwarming.
